Keeping with the now three-year tradition, Mira Costa’s Associated Student Body is bringing the yacht back for the 2014 Winter Formal.

The dance will take place off the coast of Marina Del Rey on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. The boat departs at 7:45 p.m. and will not return until 11 p.m. This year’s theme is “Turn Down for Yacht?”

“The yacht is a premier location to hold Winter Formal,” Activities Director Lisa Claypoole said. “It’s a wonderful event and a great high school experience for our students that I hope they take advantage of.”

Senior Lane Bissett and junior Kristin Reed are co-commissioners of special events for ASB. The commissioners work together to plan the event’s location, sell tickets, publicize and make sure students enjoy the dance. The yacht company oversees the catering and entertainment.

“The commissioners have most of the say in planning,” Claypoole said. “I let them do what they want and will intercede if they are going to do something drastic.”

According to the commissioners, the popularity of Winter Formal has grown in the past two years. They hope that it will eventually grow into a student-wide event.

“Winter Formal is an intimate and cool experience,” Bissett said. “Because it’s on a yacht, it gives students a different experience than dances at school, and it’s intimate in the fact that the location isn’t too spread out, so it’s fun, especially for dancing.”

This year, the night will feature a DJ, dance floor and a top deck. According to Reed, students enjoyed the yacht so much over the previous years that the commissioners decided to continue the theme.

“We were all very pleased with last year’s formal,” Reed said. “The yacht is something different that most schools don’t do, so it is a very unique opportunity for Costa students.”

According to Claypoole, ASB sold approximately 450 to 500 tickets last year. The commissioners’ hope is to increase the sales to reach a goal of 550, the maximum capacity of the boat.

“We have improved our publicity in hopes that more students attend,” Reed said. “We have signs hung around campus, it’s announced in the daily bulletin and Mustang Morning News, and we use all sources of social media such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to inform students.”

ASB hopes to make Winter Formal a memorable night for students who attend.

“This is an amazing event that only Mira Costa students have,” Claypoole said. “I see this as one of the many opportunities to obtain the ultimate high school experience.”
