Starting as a hobby in the garage of a hardware geek, the virtual reality headset known as the Oculus Rift has now become the future of the gaming industry.

With modern graphics reaching a point of near photo-realistic quality, many game designers have been left wondering what else can be improved. The Oculus Rift answers that question, providing a virtual reality gaming experience the likes of which has never been seen before.

The Oculus Rift is a headset that features 360-degree head-tracking technology, allowing gamers to look around in every direction and fully immerse themselves into the game that they are playing. Utilizing two lenses as well as a low persistence display, which eliminates motion blur, the Oculus Rift creates a realistic viewing experience.

Virtual reality gaming is the next step in a series of advancements for the industry. It provides new depth into the interactivity of gaming and gives new freedom to the gamer. Unfortunately, the Oculus Rift is still being developed. While the product’s creators have made huge strides in gaming technology, it is not yet available to the general public, rather only to developers and supporters.

Despite virtual reality gaming being a new medium, there is already a large amount of public support, including the majority of sponsorships coming from big-name companies. Facebook recently bought Oculus Rift, and with this corporate sponsorship, the product is sure to take off. Sony also announced its newest product, Project Morpheus, which is similar in function to the Oculus Rift. This strong corporate interest in virtual gaming technology proves that it is becoming a legitimate gaming medium and will likely soon be seen in widespread public use.

The Oculus Rift represents the direction in which all gaming is heading, and through advancements in virtual reality technology, this headset allows players to feel as though they are physically present in an alternate reality. This sense of immersion represents the peak of video game technology, and through products like the Oculus Rift, the industry will change for the better.
