On Thursday, September 11, 2014, college counselors Judy Park and Caryn Ramirez conducted a workshop regarding Letters of Recommendation at lunch inside the College and Career Center.

The workshop was intended for Mira Costa Seniors and was filled to capacity with fifty students in attendance.

“A letter of Recommendation is a letter outlining a student’s strengths both in the classroom and outside of the classroom from someone that knows them from both standpoints.” Ramirez said

Seniors attended the event to learn how to ask for Letters of Recommendation from their teachers and counselors, as most students will need at least one letter of recommendation.

“A good letter of recommendation tells the university key information about the student that they may not find in the application,” Mrs. Ramirez said. “The letters should emphasize non-academic accomplishments and should explain why you will be an asset to the school from someone who knows you.”

Many topics were discussed at the workshop such as the importance of a letter of recommendation in a college application, guidelines on how to request a letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor and how to choose the best person to ask.

“Senior’s need to choose someone that knows them well and can speak to their academic strengths and personal character,” Mrs. Ramirez said.

This year the college letter of recommendation process will be done through website Naviance.

“If it weren’t for this event it would have been a lot harder for me to understand how to use my account for my letters of recommendation,” Mira Costa Senior Sara Kohrogi said.

According to attendee Hannah Dinielli, the workshop was relatively short yet still able to accurately inform students about the Letter of Recommendation process and provide them with a chance to ask questions.

“The workshop, along with the online packet made this process much easier for me,” Dinielli said.
