The Mira Costa girls water polo team looked to redeem itself for last year’s California Interscholastic Federation Division III finals loss. But they fell short on Wednesday to Arroyo Grande in this year’s semi-finals.
The final score was 7-5, with the Mustangs falling to the Eagles for the second time this season.
“We were focused on defense during this game, so when they started pulling ahead, we had to put our offense in gear,” junior whole set Kaylee Brownsberger said.
Senior co-captain Kelly Giery scored in the first, ending the quarter 1-1.
“Our defense was good, although we dropped too much and they took advantage of it,” coach Jon Reichardt said.
In the second quarter, Costa won the sprint for the ball, allowing Brownsberger to score. Costa kept the Eagles from scoring, while sophomore attacker Aminadi Anorve-Saeth and Giery scored to finish the quarter with Costa leading, 4-2.
“Our defense was working well, and it gave us more scoring opportunities,” Giery said.
The Eagles scored five goals during the second half, along with Costa’s lone goal. The game ended with a score of 7-5.
“The girls played with a lot of heart this year,” Reichardt said.
