Girls soccer came one step closer to a CIF ring on Tuesday.
The girls soccer team played against Chaparral High School in the second round of Division II California Interscholastic Federation playoffs. The Mustangs started slow but came back and beat Chaparral, 2-1, due to sophomore forward Delaney Whittet’s goal in overtime.
“We kept going back and forth, but we fought hard and deserved to win,” senior forward McKenna Doyle said.
During the first half, neither team could convert its efforts into a goal, leading to a score of 0-0 at the end of 40 minutes.
“We played a very evenly matched team today,” Doyle said.
The second half heightened in intensity when Chaparral scored a goal, taking a 1-0 lead. Costa fought back, and junior midfielder Kendall Douglas scored off of a volley, sending the game into overtime.
“It was upsetting when they scored on us, but we stepped up,” Douglas said.
Eight minutes into sudden death overtime, Doyle crossed the ball to Whittet, who scored in the lower left corner of the goal, making the final score 2-1. The girls played Santiago yesterday, but results were unavailable at the time of publication.
“This team means a lot to all of us, so we’re not ready for the season to end, and that’s what drove us to play our best,” Whittet said.
