Mira Costa’s improvisational team Comedy Sportz, matched the El Segundo High School Comedy Sportz team on Feb. 27 ending in a final score of 40-30.

Comedy Sportz has won two of three matches this season. Four members participate on each team and the team with the loudest claps from the audience at the end of the skit receives five points.

“When we play at home we tend to do a lot better and end up winning those matches,” Comedy Sportz co-captain Charlie Durham said. “I hope to improve our team to help us get better at away games, our team is great but there is always room for improvement.”

Comedy Sportz played a variety of games including Pick-A-Text, one of the most popular games. To play, audience members provide their phones and Comedy Sportz members read texts out loud, which form the basis of an improvised skit.

“I love all the skits and have so much fun watching them all on stage.” Comedy Sportz member Jack Drinker said.

To prepare for the matches, Comedy Sportz holds practices twice a week at different member’s houses. During these practices, the team plays skits and afterwards recieves constructive criticism from team leaders.

“I think that practice is really fun because it’s a chance to practice what we need to work on,” Comedy Sportz member Cole Keefer said. “We can also enjoy improv as we practice.”

The Comedy Sportz team is currently performing at the Fullerton Drama Festival until tomorrow at Fullerton College. Fullerton is a California drama festival where Southern California schools go to compete. Comedy Sportz has been preparing for Fullerton for the last few weeks for the compitition along with the drama department. Judges will determine the winners by compiling scores based on how well the team preforms improv in various theatre-based acts from today and tomorrow. Last year, Comedy Sportz won all their matches.

“I’m really excited for Fullerton and I am excited to see how well our team will do,” Durham said. “I really want to do well at Fullerton this year and since we are taking two full teams, I think that we will all have a ton of fun which I am happy about.”
