The Drama Department competed in the annual Fullerton drama festival at University of California Fullerton on Mar. 20 and 21 and won a variety of awards including the Sweepstakes Award for the third consecutive year.

The “Sweepstakes Award” is determined by the total amount of accumulated points a school scores in each scene they choose to perform at the festival and Costa had the greatest amount of points in the end. The department took 1st place in Musical Theater and Contemporary Ensemble and 2nd place in Graphic Design, Tech Olympics, and Theater Games.

“I was surprised yet again about winning the sweepstakes,” Carol Mathews said. “I knew we were a huge target because we had won the past two years.”

Scenes are judged on choreography, costumes, vocals, acting and professionalism. Scenes from the spring musical, “Thoroughly Modern Millie” were performed along with student directed scenes.

“We did well because we had so much energy and stayed so positive,” senior Cameron Boyer said. “The highlight for me was right before our last performance when we all just huddled and then waited for our turn.”

The tech team competed in seven different events: tool identification, costume quick change, electrical wiring, team knot tying, light hang, prop set up and tool usage. They split into two teams, Team Green and Team Gold, with five people designated to each team. They won eight tech medals with the gold team coming in 2nd and the green team coming in 3rd.

“The teams worked very well with one another,” junior Dana Beech said. “We were able to identify strengths and weaknesses before the competition which gave us time to prepare and figure out strategies for the competition.”
