The Mira Costa boys beach volleyball team defeated Notre Dame and Palos Verdes on Thursday afternoon in Manhattan Beach. The Mustang’s undefeated season stays intact, boosting its record to 4-0.

Each of the three pairs on Costa’s side swept their opponents. Seniors Jackson Wedbush and Roy McFarland won both of their sets with scores of 21-13 and 21-11.

“I was very happy that Jackson and I both sided out,” McFarland said. “We won all of our games which is a great sign for games to come.”

Wedbush put up seven kills and made two blocks in the Mustang’s game against Palos Verdes. They won their games against Palos Verdes 21-11 and 21-15. Later, they won both games against Notre Dame 21-11.

“I think that my partner and I took care of business today,” Wedbush said. “Both Roy and myself played pretty well.”

Sophomores Dane Johnson and Ethan Shinn played matches nearly as devastating as Wedbush and McFarland. They defeated Notre Dame 21-11 and 21-13 and Palos Verdes 21-15 and 21-17.

“We played really well on Thursday,” Johnson said. “We never let the opponent get the lead throughout the game, and ended up winning all of our matches.”

The final dominant pair was made up of seniors Declan Wright and Joao Conde. The two also swept all of their games, beating Palos Verdes 21-18 and 21-14, and beating Notre Dame 21-14 and 21-15.

“For our first league matches of the season, we played really well,” Wright said. “Each team played excellent and we ended up sweeping them.”

Next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Dockweiler Beach, Costa will be playing in a tournament, playing against Costa’s rival, Redondo Union High School.

“This weekend I look forward to getting a chance to play,” McFarland said. “We play Redondo in what should be our hardest game of the season.”
