The Mira Costa boys beach volleyball team defeated Redondo Union High School and Alemany High School on Saturday in Dockweiler Beach.

Each pair of Mustangs dominated and won all of their matches. Senior partners Jackson Wedbush and Roy Mcfarland won all of their matches without losing a game.

“We did a great job of scoring points, especially on our serves,” Mcfarland said. “We played very consistently throughout our matches which helped us play the way we did.”

Mcfarland was the top performer for the Mustangs, with a total of three blocks, eight digs, ten kills, and twelve bump kills, leading partners Wedbush and Mcfarland to their victories.

“Over the weekend, Mcfarland and I had very consistent serves, which contributed to many of the points we scored, especially in the match against Redondo,” Wedbush said.

Mcfarland and Wedbush defeated their first opponents, Alemany High School 21-8 and 21-9, and then defeated their rivals, Redondo High School 21-15 and 21-16.

“It felt good to take down our rivals, considering that they beat us last time,” Mcfarland said. “The team stayed focused throughout the entire match in order to win the match.”

Another of the Mustang pairs, seniors Declan Wright and Joao Conde, defeated Alemany 21-10 and 21-5 and defeated Redondo 21-18 and 26-24.

“My partner and I have been training really hard which allowed for a strong connection in the match,” Wright said. “We played hard and smart which enabled us to pull through even when we were tired.”

The other partnership for the Mustangs were sophomores Dane Johnson and Ethan Shinn. They defeated Alemany 21-7 and 21-9, but were defeated by Redondo 21-17 and 15-10.

“Despite the tough playing conditions, I feel like Johnson and I played well,” Shinn said. “Even though we lost a match, with playoffs around the corner I feel like we are prepared.”

As the season concluded this weekend, the Mustangs finished with a 9-1 overall record. This Wednesday at Dockweiler Beach, in the first round of California Interscholastic Federation, the Mustangs will take on Oxnard High School.

“It was really good to get these wins before entering playoffs,” Wright said. “We have confidence in our abilities and I think we could do damage in the playoffs if we play the way we did on Saturday.”
