Mira Costa’s annual costume contest was hosted by the associated student body on October 30th where staff members and students got to compete for their best costumes on the Mustang Mall stage.

The contest had several categories of costumes including best in each grade level, best homemade costume, look alike costumes, best group costume, teacher group costume, most creative costume and overall best costume. Each contestant had a photo displayed in ASB in which costumes were voted on. The overall winner was freshman Natalie Sung, dressed as a vending machine made of cardboard and paint.

“This year we had a very good turnout, and I think it finally has to do with our new center of campus along with a lot of people in every grade level that showed up,”ASB advisor Lisa Claypoole said.

A majority of the winners had designed and made their costumes from scratch, including junior Chance Davis, winner for the best homemade costume.

“I’ve always been into doing crazy costumes ever since I was in elementary school,” Davis said. “I was happy that I won because I spent over ten hours making my costume and was able to get recognized for my work.”

The best look alike winners were juniors Sara and Leah James. They dressed as the evil twins from the movie “The Shining”.

“We were inspired from another friend that did something similar to our costume so we decided to do the same thing.” Leah James said. “It was really fun making the costume and using the fake blood for the full look.”

Additionally, senior Carrey Vasquez won best in her grade level dressed as ‘Yeezus,’ a mix of Kanye West’s album and Jesus. According to Vasquez, she decided on her costume since she loves Kanye West and his music.

“I love when our school dresses up for anything and the amount of people who went all out on their costumes this year made picking the winners really difficult.” ASB commissioner of elections Breegan Knudson said.
