The Manhattan Beach Unified School District Board of Trustees revised Board Policy 4040 which covers Employee Use of Technology at the Nov. 4 MBUSD Board of Trustees meeting.

According to MBUSD Board President Bill Fournell, the cause for the revisions to Board Policy 4040 was to maintain and make sure that the policy is aligned with the new California state education code, amended this year, that cover district technology protection measures regarding protecting students from accessing obscene or harmful content.

“The general focus of the revisions were to make sure that district technology and internet are not abused on school campus,” Fournell said.

The focus of the Board’s revisions is blocking access to sites that the Board deems inappropriate.

A second revision to the policy was the addition of an Acceptable Use Agreement. This agreement is intended to provide a statement that employees sign signifying that they understand the policy in regards to what type of behavior is considered acceptable when it comes to the use of district technology and district internet access.

“[This] is a part of the educational codes to make sure we have these technology usage agreements in place,” Fournell said. “Despite the Board’s efforts to block access to material that should not be available on school sites, it is still possible and employees have an obligation to only access internet content and district technology in ways the board deems acceptable.”
