Mira Costa’s girls water polo team defeated Esperanza High School 12-3 in a non-conference game on Saturday at home, with top performances by seniors utility Kaylee Brownsberger and attacker Yen Nguyen.

The Mustangs started out slow in the first half and were losing 1-0 due to a lack of defense. By the second half, Costa was back in its stride and goals by Brownsberger and Nguyen led the team to victory. According to Brownsberger, the team played great despite its slow start.

“It felt great to win, but the game was more about how we played and how we persevered,” Brownsberger said. “We played better as the game progressed and in the fourth quarter, the team really shined.”

The Mustangs are currently 4-4 overall. Costa’s junior varsity team will play in place of varsity against Culver City High school’s varsity team at the Culver City Plunge on Wednesday. According to Nguyen, the match should be very competitive.

“The junior varsity team is starting to work a lot better together, and the girls are starting to make a solid play as a team,” Nguyen said. “They don’t have an organized game set yet, but they have a good foundation of teamwork and cooperation than they can build on.”
