Mira Costa hosted the second TEDx Costa conference on Jan. 13 during second office hours in the small theater.

This talk was an independently organized TED event where speakers come to share their experiences and give advice to the audience. The student members of the Manhattan Beach Mayor’s Youth Council created this conference with the theme of creativity as the second of their three total TEDx Costa conferences for this school year.

‘’I think that the processing of curating gives the MYC kids a chance to expose all students to the powerful messages of TED talks,’’ Mayor’s Youth Council Co-Chair Penny Bordokas said. “They get a chance to pick subjects that matter to them and present them in a way that students will enjoy.”

According to TEDx planner and sophomore Chandler Coate, the students of Mayor’s Youth Council chose the theme of creativity because every person possesses creativity, and it’s important for people to learn how to express it, which was one of the key points this topic addressed.

“This theme definitely applies to students, as well as everyday life,” TEDx Costa Management Director junior Julian Grunauer said. “It’s my firm belief that everyone is creative in some way, and that spark of artistic passion should be found and nurtured in all of us.”

Sachs taught the audience how to be have a creative mindset by talking about her writing process and sharing her spoken word poetry to with the audience. Sachs stated that learning creativity can help teach people about themselves, as well as help make the world a better place.

“I wanted to share with everyone why I love writing so much as well as what I’ve learned, I did so by doing some of my spoken word poetry and talking about each one and what they mean to me,” Sachs said.

The upcoming TEDx Costa conference on April 13 has different themes, however the the theme of the next conference is still undecided. The students hope to continue to draw audiences to the conferences in the future by creating themes

“I think anyone can benefit from being more creative because being creative is all about expressing yourself and finding out who you are,” Sachs said. “This can help a person be more in touch with themselves which allows people to be more relatable to others and the world as well as be more kind and compassionate.”
