Mira Costa’s girls water polo defeated rival Redondo Union High School 7-4 in its final Bay League game at Redondo on Wednesday, winning the title of Bay League champion.

The Mustangs were ahead in the first half 4-2 due to strong defense and communication. In the second half, Costa furthered its lead and with two goals by seniors Kaylee Brownsberger and one goal by senior Yen Nguyen, Costa defeated the Seahawks. According to Nguyen, the team really pulled through in Wednesday’s match.

“The last time we played Redondo Union we fell behind in the last quarter, so it was rewarding to end up victorious,” Nguyen said. “We really stepped up our defense, and we played a cohesive team.”

The Mustangs finished first in Bay League 6-1 and are currently 16-11 overall. The team’s next game is a non-conference game against Warren High School at Downey High School on Friday. According to Nguyen, the team has high capabilities and should do well in Friday’s match.

“The last time we played Warren we won by only one point, so it will be interesting to see how the match goes,” Nguyen said. “If our defense stayed strong we should be able to get the win.”
