Mira Costa’s boys lacrosse defeated Newport Harbor 7-6 at home on Wednesday in a non-conference game. The game was the second  close, low scoring game this season due to top performances from senior goalie John Van Sickle.

After Newport scored the first goal, the Mustangs quickly caught up and never fell behind, and were slightly ahead throughout the close game. The defense capitalized on its mistakes and with numerous saves by Van Sickle, Costa won the game. According to Van Sickle, the offense did a great job of keeping possession of the ball and tiering the other team out.

“I think everyone did their job tonight and even though it was a really close game, I feel like no one was really doubting our team,” Van Sickle said. “I think everyone was really confident throughout the whole game so it went well.”

Costa, now 2-1 overall, will next play in a non-conference game against Culver City at home on Monday at 7 p.m. According to Van Sickle, if the team played the way it did against Newport Harbor, then the boys will do well against Culver City and potentially make it far in California Interscholastic Federation (CIF.)

“I think we will do well,” Van Sickle said. “The younger guys will be getting more playing time, and it will be great for them to go out there for more playing experience.”
