Mira Costa’s baseball team defeated the Morningside Monarchs 11-0 on Thursday at home. Top performance from sophomore pitcher Joey Acosta, helped the Mustangs keep their clean sheet.

Acosta kept his shutout for five innings and had five strikeouts with no walks and only one hit allowed. The Mustangs rallied on runs in the beginning innings helping them keep their momentum for the remainder of the game. According to Acosta, the team did a great job of finishing runs on offense with runners in scoring position.

“The team played great today, Acosta said. “We did a great job of getting hits and scoring runs early in the game which gave us momentum going forward. [senior] Brett [Davis] did a great job behind the plate and I just tried to pitch to contact and my defense made the plays for me.”

The Mustangs, now 21-5 overall and 4-2 in Bay League, hit the road as the team will drive up to Berkeley to play nationally ranked Davis High School in the finals of the Boras Classic on Saturday. According to Acosta, the stakes are high, but he feels the team can pull through with what they’ve got.

“Saturday is obviously a huge game for us and we just have to keep simple,” Acosta said. “We have Trevor on the mound and we are always confident we he is pitching.”
