Mira Costa’s boys volleyball team swept Tesoro High School 3-0 at home in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) quarterfinal winning 25-19, 25-21, and 25-15.  The Mustangs’ aggression early on led to a quick sweep of the Titans.

Both teams came out ready to play in the first set, but the mix of Costa’s home atmosphere and the team’s ability to string together solid passes and set up opportunities for kills eventually gave Mira Costa the advantage by six points in the first set, ending 25-19.

“Winning the first set gave us a lot of confidence as the match went on,” senior opposite Jackson Wedbush said.

The second set went down in similar fashion as the first, ending 25-21.  Tesoro showed some slight resilience as the second set progressed, but the Mustangs showcased how their talent and camaraderie can overcome adverse situations.

“The second set was closer but everyone stuck together and had confidence in each other which really helped us in the later stages of the set,” Wedbush said.

The Mustangs jumped on the Titans early in the third set and dominated the whole way through, ending the set at 25-15.  Tesoro proved to be a worthy opponent, but the Mustangs consistently hammered them with spikes and kept up a sharp defensive side.

“We knew we were the better team and we took care of what we needed to do,” Wedbush said.  “Now our focus lies on the next game.”

Costa, now 25-5 overall, will next play Corona Del Mar High School at home on Wednesday in the CIF quarterfinal.  According to senior setter Rob Mullahey, the team will need to make sure they are fully focused and ready to play.

“Corona Del Mar will be a good team, but we have everything it takes to beat them,” Mullahey said.
