Mira Costa Spanish teacher Sandra Martinez-Sellan will begin teaching an Honors Native Speaking class as a part of the approved course list, beginning in the 2016-2017 school year.

This class has been taught to Native Spanish speaking students who have learned the language prior to taking the courses provided at school. This has been taught in previous years, however was not an offered course during the 2015-2016 school year due to a lack of participating students who wanted to take the class. There will only be one period of the course with an estimated 30 students participating.

“Although this class has been taught in the past, we felt that it was necessary to bring it back for next year,” Sellan said. “We have a lot of native speakers in our regular classes and we felt that we needed a class better suited for them.”

There is currently no application process, however Martinez-Sellan recommends that native Spanish speaking students talk with her before choosing to take this class to ensure it is the right fit for the student.

“This greatly benefits the native speakers because this class is more individualized,” Sellan said. “This will give the teachers opportunities to better cater to what these students need to focus on.”

This class will focus on catering to the needs of those who take the class, including improvement on their writing or reading skills. Students will be able to take the Advanced Placement exam at the end of the year if they choose, or take AP Spanish the following year.

“We have gotten very positive feedback so far,” Sellan said. “The students seem really excited about the new class where they no longer have to sit in a class where they may already understand everything.”
