Mira Costa’s Associated Student Body announced seniors Cole Keefer and Pooja Nagpal as prom king and queen at the 2016 Prom on Saturday at the Hollywood Palladium.

Approximately 1,000 people attended prom including students, chaperones and Costa staff members. ASB Junior Class Officers Rose Darcy, Kalea Frank and Leah James planned the event. This year, they chose the theme, “An Evening on Sunset,” based on prom’s venue, which was located on Sunset Boulevard.

“I loved the way prom turned out this year; my favorite part was the lights and the way the dance floor lit up,” Darcy said. “Everyone was dancing the whole time, and it was so fun to see everyone all dressed up and enjoying themselves.”

The senior class nominated the prom court on June 1 by placing votes for one king and one queen during lunch. ASB then tallied the votes and announced the nominees the same day, which included seniors Shubhayu Bhattacharyay, Molly Dvorkin, Sam Jones, Trevor Julius, Rachel Kay, Keefer, Diego Madrigal, Danielle Major, Tyler Morgan, Nagpal, Maddy Silver and Renee Ventura.

“I’m extremely honored and very humbled to be named prom queen,” Nagpal said. “Having Cole as my partner was amazing because he is one of the nicest and most deserving people at Costa that I have grown to know these past four years.”

Chaperones and teacher volunteers gave Costa juniors and seniors two marbles at prom. Students put one marble in each box labeled with the name of each nominee in order to vote for prom king and queen. Voting for king and queen was open from 7-10 p.m. and  afterwards, teacher volunteers tallied the votes and announced the results at the end of the night.

“I felt super honored to be crowned as the prom king,” Keefer said. “It was a really awesome experience. I was surprised when they called my name  since I was not expecting it at all.”
