Although sophomore Charlie Manley recently moved from Boston to Manhattan Beach, she did not forget to bring her A-game to the lacrosse field, as she showed her skills this season on Mira Costa’s varsity team.

Manley dominated this year at Costa, which is why it may come as a shock to find out that she moved to Manhattan Beach around mid-way through the school year. She claims the move was a big change, and that there is a vast difference between lacrosse on the east and west coast because lacrosse is much more popular in the east.

“The transition from Boston to Manhattan Beach was definitely a change,” Manley said. “Girls lacrosse is still an up and coming sport on the west coast, and it is a lot more competitive on the east coast.”

Despite the transition, Manley had incredible success on the field this year, and she has been selected to be on the First Team All-region lacrosse team. Due to the high amount of high schools in the Los Angeles area, few players are chosen, making it a prestigious honor.

“The all region team is an all star team from all of the Los Angeles area, and one to two players from each team are pre-picked to play against the all region two team,” Manley said.

One attribute that contributed to Costa’s success this season was Manley’s ability to score and be a constant threat to the opposing team’s defense. As a sophomore on varsity, Manley was an integral part of Costa’s success, as they finished with eight wins.

“I think I did well offensively this year,” Manley said. “I’m a full field player, but I think I was strongest when I was on the offensive side of the field and scoring goals.”

The secret to Manley’s success on the field is her hard-work and dedication off the field. In order to get to the level she is at today, Manley is constantly working on her game outside of school to keep improving and perform well in games.

“Outside of school, I play on a club team, so I get to play in a lot of tournaments and go to some clinics for practice,” Manley said. “I also work on my shot a lot at home.”

Manley’s skill is evident through her statistics and she has shown to have the attributes of a great athlete through her hard work, but her future with lacrosse is uncertain. She is still deciding what to do with her career and how far she wants to take it.

“For the future, I’m not sure if I want to play in college yet. I’ve already talked to some coaches from a couple of my top schools, but I’m not 100% positive on what I want to do yet,” Manley said.
