Getting nominated for Sandacre Teacher of the Year is no easy task… unless you have an entourage of students who admire you.

Mira Costa Robotics and Computer science teacher and former Costa graduate Aaron Braskin was another teacher to win the Sandacre Teacher of the Year award for the 2015-2016 school year. Braskin has worked hard to incorporate themes of learning and comfort into his classroom, ideas that Braskin felt costa classrooms were lacking when he attended Costa in his youth.

“When I was a student here, there were very few places where I felt that I fit in, and I wanted to do something to change that,”

Braskin said. “What I’ve tried to do with my classroom and classes is orient them in a way that attracts students to learning about technology,”

Though he’s only been a part of the Mira Costa faculty for 4 Years, Braskin has made significant changes to the Computer Science and Robotics classes by not only enhancing his class structure to be more interesting and intriguing, but also engineering a creative and comfortable atmosphere for his students to strive and be inspired.

“I think my enthusiasm for computer science and just for technology in general is something that students pick up on,” Braskin said. “The fact that I love it, and that I’m willing to come in and spend as much time with the students as they’re willing to spend really attracts students to my class,”

Braskin has also taken an active role in promoting technology by advising multiple student run clubs such as the Robotics Club and the Girls Only Coding club in the hopes of inspiring students to learn about computer science and programming.

“In my short time here, I have had students who knew nothing about computer science before taking my class, and then actually end up going on to major in computer science and other related fields,” Braskin said. “There’s no greater feeling than knowing that I made a positive impact on my student.”
