Last year’s Mira Costa juniors increased their scores on the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) Exam compared to exam scores the prior year.

The Smarter Balanced Assessment System is part of California’s Common Core standards to test students’ knowledge of nationwide content regarding English Language Arts and mathematics. Students took the exam from May 23-26, 2016, and of the 95% of Costa juniors who participated, 44% exceeded English Language Arts standards and 30% exceeded mathematics standards.  The year before, only 71% of juniors participated and 38% exceeded standards in English Language Arts and 24% exceeded standards in mathematics.

“I’m less interested in the score and more interested in the process,” Costa Principal Dr. Ben Dale said. “I think that students were more prepared for the type of test that it was.”

Additionally this year, 31% of juniors met standards in English Language Arts, 13% nearly met standards and 11% did not meet standards. In mathematics, 34% of juniors met standards, 22% nearly met standards and 14% did not meet standards.

“As long as in every class across campus, we continue to increase our understanding of what skills are necessary for students to be successful, then the scores will take care of themselves,” Dale said.
