Boys water polo defeats Peninsula 13-2

Mustangs’ scoring onslaught sets precedent for Costa right from the start in Tuesday’s water polo game versus Peninsula.

Mira Costa boys water polo team crushed Peninsula 13-2 in the Bay League game, continuing the Mustangs’ 3-game winning streak.

“I think we played pretty well overall,” sophomore driver Hudson Carter said. “We pressured the ball, played stellar defense, and capitalized on our chances.”

The game started with a goal apiece sophomore attacker Chris Agliozzo and senior set guard Lucas Brannan. Junior attacker Liam Cook scored a goal at the end of the first quarter to make it 3-0.

“We just kept putting on pressure, kept attacking and attacking, which lead to our early goals,” Agliozzo said.

Shortly after Costa won the ball off the sprint, Agliozzo scored twice, giving Costa a five point lead. Senior attacker, Christian Thornton put a point on the scoreboard along with sophomore attacker Clay Allen, keeping a 7-0 lead at halftime.

“Our defense in the second quarter was strong, which lead our offense to create more opportunities and capitalize on them,” Agliozzo said.

Thornton scored two goals in the opening minutes pf the second half. Peninsula responded with a goal, breaking the Mustangs’ shutout. Late in the quarter, sophomore attacker Colin Le scored, making the score 10-1.

“We scored more goals in this quarter to add on to our lead, but they also had chances too, and they scored one, which shifted a bit of the momentum,” Carter said.

Peninsula opened up the final quarter with a goal to cut the lead. However, Agliozzo and junior attacker, Ben Heagy quickly responded with two goals, making the game out of reach. Junior attacker, Ethan Chalk closed out the game with a goal, resulting in a final score of 13-2.

“I did my part today by contributing three goals to the team,” Agliozzo said. “We just worked together as a team and finished the game on a strong note.”

The 3-0 Mustangs will look for their fourth straight win Thursday at 3pm in a Bay League game when they host Palos Verdes. The Mustangs are a 3-0 overall, and 1-0 in the Bay League.

“We need to get focused and rest up for Thursday’s game against Palos Verdes,” Carter said. “As long as we work together as a team, we should be successful on Thursday, and in all of our upcoming games this weekend.”
