The Mira Costa Mustangs defeated the Peninsula High School Panthers 21-7 away on Friday, with top performances from junior linebacker Cody Kallenbach and senior wide receiver Alec Oshita.

The Mustangs started the game with an interception from senior corner Harrison Duglarian. The interception transitioned into a four yard Mustang touchdown run from sophomore quarterback Reed Vabrey.

“Starting off the game strong was important for us since the offense did not have much energy,” Kallenbach said. “We definitely need to work on our offense.”

Two drives later for the Mustangs, they were able to march down the field and increase their lead with a seven yard touchdown pass from Vabrey to Oshita giving the Mustangs a 14-0 lead going into halftime.

“It helped that Justin Goring was running the ball hard,” Oshita said. “This helped open holes up for receivers, and we were able to convert.”

The Mustangs’ defense held the the Panthers scoreless until their final drive of the game where they conceded a 15 yard touchdown pass. Before the Panther’s touchdown, the Mustangs were able to record three sacks and an interception.

“The defense played really well today,” Kallenbach said. “We tackled well, and played perfect coverage, but we have to work on limiting penalties.”

To begin the fourth quarter, the Mustangs were able to increase their lead to 21-0 with a 14 yard rushing touchdown from senior running back Justin Goring. According to Oshita, this helped put the game away.

“The touchdown in the 4th quarter was really important,” Oshita said. “It showed what this offense is capable of and the weapons we have.”

The Mustangs, now 4-2 overall, and 1-0 in Bay League, will play Morningside High School on Friday night at Waller Stadium for their second league game.

“We need to practice hard this week because we played sloppy this game,” junior cornerback Evanson Franck-Love said. “We want to get better every week and we can show how we improved in our next game.”
