Members of the Mira Costa High School Model United Nations Program attended the Cerritos High School Model United Nations conference on Oct. 8 and the Edison High School Model United Nations Conference on Oct. 15 and 16.

The Cerritos conference took place at Cerritos High School and the Edison Conference took place at Edison High School. Novice debaters, mainly freshmen, participated in the Cerritos conference, which is the second of the year, and advanced debaters competed in the Edison conference.

“Cerritos is a great conference that helped all of us grow and learn as debaters,” sophomore Lucas Falley said. “The conference helped us all become more familiar in the debate setting.”

CHSMUN allowed inexperienced debaters a chance to work on new skills and learn new tactics in order to become more advanced, Falley said. The novice debaters competed against other novice debaters from schools across Southern California.

“We use Cerritos to perfect our skills for future debates,” Secretary General and senior Davis said. “It is great to practice our speaking, caucusing, and researching.”

60 advanced debaters attended the Edison conference that they have been practicing for since the beginning of the year by having in class debates. Debaters chose partners for both debates and they could choose to debate alone if they preferred.

“Learning new debate skills and working on things you see from other people is key,” Falley said. “I’m looking forward to this year of conferences so Edison was good in order to prepare for conferences later in the year.”

At the Edison debate, Costa had 8 delegates win best delegate, 17 students got outstanding delegate, and 25 students got a commendation. Those numbers are more impressive than the amount in years past at the Edison MUN conference according to Secretary General Matt Dumont.

“This conference was a great way for everyone to warm up and get ready for the year,” senior delegate Ben Falley said. “We did really well as a school so this is a great way to start off.”

Mira Costa’s next conference will take place at Brown University. The conference will be a simulation of the actual United Nations conference and which will take place on Nov. 11 through Nov. 13.

“We have really high expectations this year,” Mira Costa Model UN teacher Bob Timberlake said. “We have high expectations every year, but this year I think we are in a position where we can win best school at every conference we go to.”

** CORRECTION: La Vista’s second issue, out on Oct. 21, incorrectly stated that the school tied for the Best Delegate Award, which is the incorrect title for the award. Mira Costa’s Model United Nations tied for the Best Delegation Award at the Edison High School MUN Conference. Additionally, senior Ben Falley was incorrectly quoted as junior.
