Amid chaos, the boulder must finally go up

Old words of advice scrawled on a desk used to echo through La Vista; “You manage chaos; contribute, don’t create.”

Although lost years ago in the destruction, reconstruction and eventual renovation of what was once room six, these words ring truer than ever before. Chaos, to put it simply, describes the universal sentiment on campus as the first quarter of the school year comes to an end.

As we seniors breathe a sigh of relief at the fact that we have three quarters left in high school, I have begun to realize the Sisyphean struggle that now faces us all: this is really just the beginning of an uphill climb.

The myth of Sisyphus is one of suffering yet perseverance: as a punishment in Hades, Sisyphus is forced to push an enormous boulder up a hill only to watch it to roll down. This cycle repeats ceaselessly for all of eternity.

We are all Sisyphus. Homework, sports, extracurriculars and, for seniors, applications: these are our boulders. We are caught in the cyclical nature of pushing up our boulders only to watch as they roll back down.

Each extracurricular, sport and club inevitably has its own recurring challenges, yet it appears that those at Costa are spearheading the upward trek. Marching Band excelled at its first competition two weeks ago, placing first and winning High Visual Sweepstakes.

Not to mention, Comedy Sportz and MUN saw success in their first match and Edison Conference, respectively. Additionally, ASB seamlessly pulled off a week of Homecoming festivities, and every couple of weeks, our newspaper (now a two-time CSPA Crown Winner) is published out of room 101.

Perhaps William Faulkner said it best—one who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones. Like Sisyphus, Costa’s extracurriculars, sports and clubs invariably tackle their boulders on a day-to-day basis, and they can only go up.
