Mira Costa’s football team defeated Inglewood High School 34-7 on Friday. They were lead by key performances from senior running back Justin Goring and junior middle linebacker Cody Kallenbach.

The Mustangs started the game off with a fumble recovery on defense, a 17 yard touchdown reception from senior wide receiver Alex Oshita, and a 40 yard touchdown run by Justin Goring.

“The first touchdown is always the most important,” Goring said. “It has the power to determine the momentum of the game and it really helps hyping up the team.”

Towards the end of the 2nd quarter, Goring rushed in a 20 yard touchdown, and the Mustangs went into halftime with a 20-0 lead. According to Kallenbach, the ability to run the ball is what set Costa apart.

“In the first half we ran the ball a lot to Justin,” Kallenbach said. “It was definitely a good strategy and we obviously benefited from it as we took a 20-0 lead at half.”

In the second half, sophomore quarterback Reed Vabrey threw for two long touchdown passes. The second touchdown came from a short bubble screen pass to senior wide receiver Chris Brown that went for 41 yards.

“With such a solid running game it really helps the receivers,” Oshita said. “How we played today gives us a lot of hope because we saw how good we can really be.”

The defense held Inglewood scoreless for three quarters, giving up a late touchdown in the fourth. The defense also forced two turnovers, as they forced a fumble in the first quarter and sophomore safety Cole Trejo intercepted a pass in the fourth.

“The defense played great today,” Kallenbach said. “We didn’t miss too many tackles, we wrapped up, and we all gave 100% effort.”

The Mustangs, now 6-2 overall and 3-0 in league play, will play Palos Verdes at home on October the 28th. According to junior cornerback Evanson Frank-Love, the team will really have to prepare this week during practice.

“It’s going to be a good game because PV is a real good team,” Frank-Love said. “We have to improve on making stops on 3rd down and we look forward to how we can develop more as a team.”
