Featuring diverse and original works of art, the Broad’s newest installation, “Creature,” proves to be extremely intriguing and enjoyable.

“Creature” features over 25 artists, each showcasing their own unique style. The diversity of the artwork makes the exhibit tasteful and allows viewers to fully appreciate each individual work of art.

“Creature” opened on November 5 at the Broad Museum in Downtown Los Angeles, and will remain open until March 14. The exhibit features artwork by famous artists including George Baselitz, Joseph Beuys and Jean-Michel Basquia among less famous artists.

The pieces in the exhibit are all centered around the theme “figuration and selfhood.” The art represents multiple interpretations of the theme including depictions of the human body and cultural representations of how living things adapt and change over time.

The first thing viewers see when they walk into “Creature” is a massive black cyclops sculpture that immediately demands attention. The statue, which was created by Thomas Houseago, is made purely of bronze. The intricate detail in every molded piece is apparent, creating an impressive piece of art.

Another excellent piece is Leon Golub’s “Wounded Phoenix.” The painting sets a very dark and ominous mood, which is apparent through the artist’s use of dark colors, choppy brush strokes and blurry outlines that make the creature blend in with the background, successfully capturing the attention of viewers.

Similar to “Wounded Phoenix,” a few of the paintings featured in “Creature” are extremely dark and can be considered borderline disturbing. The artists’ raw talents are made evident through their creative style and delicate precision that can be seen in their art.

Alex Isreal’s “Self Portrait” is an example of an extremely unique piece that adds to the exhibit’s diversity. The photograph is a picture of Israel taking a selfie, with an interesting canvas in the background .The uniqueness in the image makes the piece fun and new which contributes to the diversity in the exhibit.

The many different styles featured in the exhibit make “Creature” very intriguing, making it stand out from other art exhibits due to its exceptional variations in style and mood.

“Creature” will be open until March 14 at the Broad located at 221 S Grand Ave, Los Angeles; admission is free.
