Delaney reflects on her father’s influence

Hands clasped and shaking with laughter, I crouched behind the curtains. “Ready or not here I come.” I listened as my dad’s footsteps came closer and closer; moments later, I was peering up at my hero.

“My dad’s a private investigator. That’s why he is the best at hide-and-go-seek,” I would brag to my friends. Because his skills at “seeking” are far superior to most, my admiration for my father has only continued to grow as he has been a constant source of guidance and motivation throughout my life.

Growing up with two sisters, my house has always been filled with incessant, inescapable chatter. From the drama of a lost t-shirt to the torture of the silent treatment, it was easy to get swept up in the chaos.

However, when far away soccer fields became a weekly destination, I found myself enveloped in the intellectual calmness that surrounds my dad. For one car ride a week, I had him all to myself. It was during this time that I began to understand the meaning behind my dad’s approach to life and discover how I could integrate his values of hard work and determination into my own.

To this day, the phrase “attitude and effort” is my driving force, as it pushes me to overcome every challenge that I face. And, while my father’s advice is constantly ringing in my ears, his quiet determination to support my family is equally loud. He never fails to make my sisters and me a priority, and with his approval on the line, I am constantly pushing myself to set big goals and surpass any limitations.

My father’s my number-one fan, the best El Sombrero date and the only person who loves ice cream as much as I do. But, ready or not, in less than a year, I’ll be miles away. I’m no private investigator, but I’ll know exactly where to find him: one phone
