Owner and co-founder Katie Poppe opened Blue Star Donuts’ first location in Portland, Oregon, in 2012. Blue Star Donuts became increasingly popular, and the company has now opened multiple locations across Portland  as well as  two Los Angeles locations in Venice and Manhattan Beach and  expanded internationally into Japan.

Skilled bakers make the donuts by hand each day, using a classic French brioche recipe. Blue Star Donuts utilizes organic ingredients including cage-free eggs, whole hormone-free milk and European-style butter, which are mixed into a dough that takes 18 hours to make. The donuts are then deep-fried in rice oil and topped with fresh glazes and fillings.

Blue Star Donuts separates itself from other donut chains due to its extremely creative and delicious flavor combinations, including “Blueberry Bourbon Basil,” “Passion Fruit Cocoa Nib” and “Orange Olive Oil.” The sophisticated flavors are delicious to patrons of all ages, allowing adults to indulge in a treat that is usually reserved for children.

The brand’s unique recipe for the dough creates donuts unlike any other offered in the South Bay. The donut has a consistency similar to that of pound cake. Although more dense than traditional donuts, it delivers a delicate flavor that complements the bold flavors of its various kinds of frosting.

The donut shop stays true to its high-quality ingredient promise by offering customers glazes made using fresh fruit including blueberry, raspberry and lemon. Multiple donuts also feature fillings such as vanilla pudding, blackberry jam or lemon curd. The frostings are perfectly balanced, adding delicious sweetness to the cake.

Although the donuts are traditional round shapes with a hole or filling in the middle, the delicate decorations and colorful glazes Blue Star uses gives the treats an extraordinary aesthetic. The delectable donuts are decorated using all-natural colors, creating an appealing presentation that evokes the feeling of home-made baked goods instead of artificial, mass produced treats.

Coffee and tea can also be purchased at the donut shop, making Blue Star Donuts a convenient one-stop-shop for a delicious and quick breakfast. Customers can enjoy coffee from Coava or Stumptown Roasters or tea from Steve Smith, all of which perfectly complement the sweetness of the donuts.
