On Friday, January 27th, President Donald Trump signed an executive order temporarily suspending immigration and travel from 7 middle eastern countries. The list contained Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Somalia and Yemen, and was sourced from a previously signed law, “section 217(a)(12) of the INA, 8 U.S.C. 1187(a)(12),” according to the order. Following the order, green card and visa holders were amongst travelers detained by airports across the country.

The move, accused by many as a ban on Muslim immigrants, prompted nationwide protests, including large-scale demonstrations at the Los Angeles International Airport. The protests at LAX have been occurring since January 29th, with no apparent end in sight. Mira Costa High School students were a few of the many demonstrators present last evening.

“The people surrounding me created an atmosphere that was both loving and caring, but determined to make a difference and take a stance about the current events taking place,” said Mira Costa junior Abby Baker. “I was inspired to go because Trump’s decision potentially could greatly affect my family, considering my mom is a green card holder and I wanted to do something instead of feeling helpless and reading the news at home.”
