One team, one dream and a strong will to win.

Mira Costa’s boys soccer team kept its playoff hopes alive with a 1-0 victory over Jordan High School in an away game on Wednesday. The team received top offensive performances from senior midfielder Alex Parsa and senior midfielder Trevor Taub contributing to the single goal scored in the game.

“I believe that we passed the ball very well today and played some excellent defense,” Parsa  said. “Jordan seemed to have a very tough time trying to get through our defense.”

The majority of the first half lacked goal-scoring opportunities for both sides.  However, in the final minutes of the half, Parsa was able to head the ball into the goal off a through ball from Taub, ending the first half 1-0.

“We caught the opposing team on a quick counterattack, with Taub providing the through ball,” coach Gary Smith said. “Parsa was able to score a nice goal to put us into the lead, which we were able to maintain throughout the game.”

The Panthers started out their second half with an increased number of players on their offensive front. While this tactic left many gaps in the Panthers’ defense, the Mustangs were unable to capitalize on their opportunities because they were slow and simply unlucky, junior forward Alex de Sousa said.

“We had a lot of chances at the goal in the second half, and although it would have been nice to gain a larger lead, it didn’t matter,” de Sousa said. “The defense did a great job ensuring the win, as they did not let in any goals.”

As the Panthers dialed up the heat on offense, the Mustangs’ defense prevented multiple free kicks and corners to hold their lead. The defense did not back down because of the hard work and energy it put in the game, Smith said.

“The defense just kept on battling throughout the game, and our effort was the key to the game,” Smith said. “We also had to play against the elements such as the  bumpy grass field and the wind. Playing at home and on our turf field will give us an advantage. On turf, you have true bounces, and I believe our players are more comfortable. This will help our players settle down a little more and help us play our game.”
