“Divide” impresses with its diverse track list that shows Sheeran’s musical growth.

Ed Sheeran’s new album, “Divide,” lives up to the excitement with a stellar track list and incredible tone.

“Divide” offers vastly different songs that each showcase Ed Sheeran’s tremendous musical ability. The album intrigues listeners with a diversified track list, an abundance of various genres and the inclusion of pleasant vocals.

Ed Sheeran rose to fame as an indie singer/songwriter with the release of his 2011 and 2014 albums, “x” and “+.” Although known for his acoustic pop music, the album “Divide,” dives into a new style influenced by hip hop.

The album, “Divide,” was produced by Sheeran, himself, and R&B producer Benny Blanco. The album features singles ‘Shape Of You’ and ‘Castle On The Hill’ which broke chart records in the UK when they debuted at #1 and #2.

Staying true to his roots, Sheeran maintains his classic use of an acoustic guitar and a looper pedal to get his signature tone. The track, “Galway Girl,” displays his classic use of guitar riffs and soothing vocals. Sheeran remaining true to his original style creates a nostalgic at atmosphere reminiscent of his older music.

“Divide” opens with the first track, “Eraser” which features a style previously unexplored by Sheeran. Rap-like vocals and a fast tempo cause the song to be far less melodic than his previous songs, but just as pleasant to listen to.

Known for his tremendous ballads, Sheeran is best when heart-broken. The track “New Man” includes a somber tone, that is produced by his honest lyrics and graceful vocals. The slower change of pace that is sprinkled throughout the album produces a nostalgic and enjoyable atmosphere.

An appealing aspect about the album is that each song is diverse in its own unique way. On past releases some of the tracks had little variance in tone and style, however songs such as “How would you feel” and “Castle On The Hill” illuminate the vast styles apparent on the album. The variation in tone provides an intriguing aspect to the album as a whole.
