Armed with just a pencil, paper, and her mind, Senior Cami Chocarro produces art as creative outlet to express herself and her beliefs.

Chocarro curated an interest in art at a young age and has since expanded her skill set over the years, growing as an artist. As her interest in art and worldview broadened, she began to experiment with different mediums and incorporate various new themes into her works.

“Growing up I always loved drawing, and at restaurants, I would grab a napkin and a pen and doodle, or draw a person at the next table,” Chocarro said. “I got better as I grew up and began expanding my mediums and experimenting with different things in my pieces.”

Recently, Chocarro created a President Trump themed piece in light of the recent election. She said she was able to use the piece as a means of presenting her political beliefs and ideologies in a symbolic and constructive manner.

“President Trump is obviously a very controversial and polarizing figure,” Chocarro said. “I think that being able to express political opinion through art is the best and most peaceful way to do it.”

Chocarro utilizes a variety of mediums including pencils, oil paints, and watercolors, among others, to create her pieces. She cites many classical artists as people who have helped influence and shape her artistic style.

“Some of my favorite artists are classics such as Picasso, Van Gogh, and Andy Worhol,” Chocarro said. “I also have an outside of school oil painting teacher who is very talented and gives me lots of advice on my art.”

Chocarro likes to sell her pieces to anyone interested in them. She enjoys being able to spread her works and their messages, and recently sold one of her pieces to senior Coleman Weaver.

“The painting I received was this cool background of stars with dark and light hands kissing a captain,” Weaver said. “I was so intrigued by her cool style. She would do out of bounds stuff, like abstract art that would look like one thing until you looked further into the piece.”

In the future, Chocarro wants to make a career out of her artistic abilities. She plans to study all forms of art in college and continue to create and sell pieces in order to make a living off of it.

“I definitely want to make a career out of art,” Chocarro said. “It’s the only thing that really interests me and that I feel passionate about so hopefully I can make something of it.”
