Mira Costa’s dance team placed first in Costa’s second SHARP international regional dance competition of the year on April 1 at Monrovia High School.

The Mustangs placed first in all three of their main group dances in hip hop, jazz, and lyrical. The team performed its hip hop routine to a mix of Missy Elliott songs, and a jazz routine to “Yellow Flicker Beat” by Lorde. Dancers performed their lyrical routine to the song “Stone Cold” by Demi Lovato. Senior team captain Emily Duong placed first in her jazz solo to the upbeat and high-energy song “Lose My Breath” by Destiny’s Child, and junior team captain Cami Benson also placed first in her lyrical solo to the song “Tragedy” by Brandi Carlile.

“I feel like we performed pretty well,” junior Mackensie Banchik said. “We still have some work to do for nationals, but I think we’re on a right track.”

The dance team will next compete at the SHARP International national competition in Las Vegas on April 22 and 23 at the Cashman Center. The dance team won first place at nationals last season, and looks to sweep nationals again.

“Preparing the dances is a lot of work, but it’s rewarding,” Benson said. “I hope we do as well as we did last year, and our goal this year is to place first in nationals again.”
