The Chainsmokers’ newest album “Memories…Do Not Open” is sure to be the soundtrack to many “memories” this coming summer.

Despite its slightly generic sound, and a lack of meaningful lyrics, “Memories…Do Not Open” is a strong album that expertly incorporates upbeat instrumentals and melodic vocals.

The Chainsmokers is a electronic group composed of artists Andrew Taggart and Alex Paul. The group recently burst onto the EDM scene with hit songs, including “#Selfie,” “Roses” and “Closer.”

The group’s most recent album, “Memories…Do Not Open,” was released on April 7, and has already climbed to the number one spot on the Billboard Top 200 Chart. The album contains 12 songs, and features well known artists including Florida Georgia Line, Coldplay, and Emily Warren.

Many songs throughout the album contain similar lyrics and melodies to previously released songs by the Chainsmokers. While some may consider this to be repetition of the group’s “style,” it shows  the group’s apparent lack of dynamic ability. However, this lack of diversity detracts little from the album’s enjoyability.

“Memories…Do Not Open” features lyrics in every song, unlike most EDM albums, however, most of the lyrics were shallow, nonsensical, and irrelevant. The third song in the set list titled “Bloodstream,” contains lyrics that are confusing and seemingly irrelevant to the emotional message of the song.

The Chainsmokers are known for delivering upbeat, catchy and nostalgic instrumentals and “Memories…Do Not Open” is no exception. Every single song on the setlist is cheerful, and songs like “Paris” and “Something Just Like This” delivers quick, intense bass drops, that make the songs more fun and lighthearted.

The high pitched vocals of the album contribute to the upbeat tone. Pall, Taggart and their cast of featured artists deliver high pitched singing and rap hybrids in songs like “My Type.” The sheer amount of vocals in each of the songs is rare for EDM, and thus puts The Chainsmokers in a league of their own when it comes to new-wave dance music.

The album will serve as a baseline for future EDM artists. It is chalk-full of upbeat vocals and melodic instrumental mixes. However, the lyrics in the album are lacking, and the album is very similar to previous albums released by The Chainsmokers.

“Memories…Do Not Open” is available for streaming on Apple Music, Google Play, Spotify and Amazon, and for purchase for $9.99.
