Mira Costa’s boys golf team kept its eight-game win streak alive with a commanding win against North Torrance High School.

The game took place on Tuesday at Victoria Golf Course. The team won handily, with a score of 197-226. The Mustangs were led with low scores from senior Jack Raney (37), junior Jack Major (39) and freshman Aidan Oliver (39).

“Today, we slapped the ball around in a below-average manner, but we still came away with a victory,” Raney said. “Next time, we need to work on our conditioning so we can achieve optimal results for the next match and decrease the rigor of our nine-hole matches.”

With this victory, the Mustangs clinched a first-place finish in the Ocean League. Raney hopes that the team will continue to improve and carry its momentum into California Interscholastic Federation playoffs on May 15.

“We had a 99% chance of winning Ocean League at the beginning of the year,” Raney said. “We were able to capitalize on that opportunity today. Next time, we will win by more.”

Oliver believes that the team must improve its ability to focus while on the course and to rebound after a high-scoring hole to succeed.

“We played well enough to get a win, but still we can improve upon our mental games,” Oliver said. “We need to continue to come out with good scores on bad days.”

The Mustangs are currently 7-0 in Ocean League and 10-1 overall. The team played North Torrance again at  the Chester Washington Golf Course yesterday, but the results were not available at the time of publication.

“I feel proud,” junior Justin Del Rosario said. “It’s great to know how well we have performed, and it continually motivates me to become a better player and contribute to this team.”
