“I was shocked in an amazing way by the result,” Fry said. “It felt great to beat so many surfers who I look up to.”

In Fry’s division of 17 and under boys, there were close to 50 surfers, of which were from all over California. The competition takes place every year, but this was the first time that Fry participated. According to Fry he caught many of the best waves during his heats.

“Having such a strong performance gives me a lot of confidence for upcoming competitions,” Fry said. “I gained a lot of confidence throughout the competition and had a ton of fun along the way.”

The competition was broken up into four separate rounds. In each round, the top two out of four surfers in a heat advanced to the next round. Fry placed in the top two in each of the first three rounds, before finishing third in the finals.

“I had to perform at my highest level in each round because I was facing incredible surfers throughout the competition,” Fry said.

Fry was able to qualify for the National competition with his third place finish. Nationals will take place from June 26th to July 3rd at Huntington Beach. According to Fry the event was one of the best surfing days of his life.

“I know that nationals will be another tough contest so I will need to perform my best in each round and not get overwhelmed by the moment,” Fry said.

Fry has been surfing for the past eleven years and has traveled around the globe in pursuit of his passion. With the Costa team he has journeyed to El Salvador and Nicaragua in order to experience the best waves with his teammates.

“The thing I love about surfing is that I can be competitive while having some of the most fun I’ve ever had at the same time,” Fry said.
