Costa Administration recognizes students and staff at at All Awards Assembly

The annual Mira Costa All Awards Assembly, which honors students with academic and athletic awards, was held at the auditorium on May 24. The All Awards Assembly honors students with awards from various departments, the main award being the Student of the Year. This year’s Student of the Year Award was Senior Audrey Phan.

Mira Costa’s 2017 All Awards Assembly, which honors students with academic and athletic awards, was held at the Mira Costa auditorium on May 24.

The All Awards Assembly honors students with awards from various departments, the main award being the Student of the Year. This year’s Student of the Year Award was given to senior Audrey Phan. Teachers Bill Fauver, Aaron Kofahl and Glenn Marx won the Sandarce Teachers of the Year Award. Seniors Elizabeth Chittenden and Shante Robinson won the Outstanding Female Athlete Award. Senior Caleb Llorin won the Outstanding Male Athlete Award. Seniors Laura Sheckter and Duke Mahr won the Associated Student Body Service Award.

“Receiving the award has helped me realize that I am capable of doing great things, and that I should have more confidence in my abilities to do so,” Phan said. “Just like each student at Costa, who are unique and talented in their different ways.”

Upperclassmen Keely Parker, Riley Douglas, Lauren Schlick, Jennifer Miao, Ray Kim, Julian Reed, Katherine Elias and Kelli Hanley won the University and Book Awards. Seniors Eli Bedford, Joseph Gebele, Siena Hartzel, Juliette Justice, Thompson Kendall, Kaylee Martinsons, Adrian Murphy, Lexi Nielsen and Sydney Wible won the Learning Center Award. Seniors Leah Gallien and Jackson Saftler won the Friendship Circle Award.

“This is one of the great days of Costa, because we get to celebrate the great students that make our jobs worthwhile and [will] one day change the world,” Mira Costa English teacher Cameron Chow said. “We are able to honor those who have made such a great impact these past four years.”

Seniors Benjamin Falley, Robert Heintz, William Henderson, Alex Luo, Jennifer Marer, Kevin Mauge, Natalie Natole, Audrey Phan, Sara Reynolds, Hira Shah and Christian Thornton won the Social Studies Award. Seniors Angelique Angelastro, Benjamin Falley,  Lily Travis, Christian Thornton, Leah James, Beau Staso, Samuel Blake, Matthew DiSandro, Hannah Lee-Morrow, Margot MelDeFontenay and Lauren Woomer won the Foreign Language Award.

“Being recognized for my hard work gave me a feeling of gratification and showed me that my teachers noticed my dedication to foreign language,” Senior Lily Travis said. “For others striving for this award, I would say to always try your hardest and be respectful to your peers.”

Senior Emily Chase won the Band Award, Senior George Rochelle won both the Choir and Orchestra Awards. Seniors Isabel Gray and Conner Tree won the Drama Award, and Lindsay Thomasson won the Technical Theater Award.

“There was no way I could have chosen either Isabel Gray or Conner Tree for the award, because they are very equal in terms of the dedication that they have given to this department,” Mira Costa Drama teacher Carol Mathews said. “They both have taken on the lead or featured roles in all of our shows this year.”

Senior Allison Payne won the Broadcast Journalism Award, and Senior Bridger Hart won the Art Award. Senior Maxwell Myszkowski won the Ceramics Award, and senior Mia Friedman won the Photography Award.

“I’m really honored to have won this award and also super thankful to every friend, teacher and family member who has impacted me in some way,” Phan said. “There was no way I would have gotten this award without all their love and support.”

Senior Carissa Sevaston won the Computer Science Award. Seniors Ronald Clinton, Hana Escovar, Jessica Carver, Liam DiGregorio, Blade Snytier, Maxwell Myszkowski and Jonathan Sklar won the Science Awards. Seniors Nicholas Brandford, Scott Healy, Matthew Kennedy, Owen Konsmo, James Marsh, Kevin Mauge and Ava Niknahad won the Mathematics Award.

“It felt really rewarding to get acknowledged for my uphill battles,” Senior Jessica Carver said. “People should not give up and, instead, work hard to be different and unique and find their own passions, because once you do it’s super easy to be amazing at it.”

Seniors Cameron Chapman, Barbara Garrison, Isabel Gray, Anna Guerrero, Jennifer Marer, Erica Noll, Beau Staso, Taylor Stout and Danielle Tyuokody won the English Award. The final award was given out to senior Isabel Gray, who won the Creative Writing Award. The assembly ended with a slideshow contantaining pictures of the graduating class as well as a separate slideshow to honor the Student of the Year, Audrey Phan.

“I’m still amazed at the magnitude of talent and intelligence at Costa everyday,” Phan said. “I was so impressed from watching everyone get awards and also so proud knowing that we all attend the same school.”
