KOFAHL:

Aaron Kofahl is the newest teacher out of the Teacher of the Year recipients. This is his third year at Mira Costa, and he has taught Geography, World History, United States History, and Advanced Placement (AP) Psychology. He currently only teaches AP Psychology.

Q: What was your reaction to being named as one of the teachers of the year?

A: I was really surprised because I had no idea that it was a possibility for me, but it feels really good. I’ve put a lot of work into building curriculum especially for AP Psychology and it feels really good that got recognized after putting the time in. Especially being a newer teacher and I now have a tangible way of knowing that my hard work has been recognized.

Q:What is your favorite part about teaching?

A: I enjoy interacting with young people in a way that encourages them to think about their lives and the world differently, ask questions about what we know and how we know it, gain other people’s perspectives and create a fuller human experience for my students and myself.

FAUVER:

Bill Fauver has been at Costa from 31 years. Throughout his Costa journey he has taught Yearbook, United States History, Advanced Placement United States History, World History and has served as Vice Principal and activities director. He currently teaches World History and Government.

Q: What was your reaction to being named as one of the teachers of the year?

A: I was super surprised because I’m old and I’m probably significantly out of touch with young people, Im also probably more old fashion than my teaching techniques so it was a shock.

Q:What is your favorite part about teaching?

A: The teaching itself. I love the everyday interaction with kids, and I love to make them interested and better at the skills and content that history brings. I could do without everything outside the classroom, but in the classroom when I shut the door, it is still the best job in the world.

MARX:

Glenn Marx has been a part of the Costa family for 30 years. He has taught Speech, English, Economics and Government. He currently teaches Government and Economics and also serves as Costa’s Athletic Director.

Q: What was your reaction to being named as one of the teachers of the year?

A: My first thought was that students voted which is most important to me. I also think its great that all teachers are from the Social Science Department. A lot of Costa students take Government over the summer to avoid Fauver and I so I hear, so it’s definitely cool and interesting that we received this award.

Q:What is your favorite part about teaching?

A: Watching people grow and get better. It’s great to have students come back and tell me my class has impacted their lives or helped them in one way or another.
