The girls volleyball team continued to soar over the net, bumping their record up after defeating Palos Verdes on Tuesday.

The Mustangs defeated Palos Verdes, 3-1, in an away Bay League match. The top performer, junior setter Rochelle Scott, helped the Mustangs win by providing sets and by making important kills.

“Our strong mentality and the support we gave to each other after making kills [allowed us] to come out with the win,” sophomore outside hitter Katie Colvin said.

The Mustangs were narrowly defeated 25-23 in the first set. However, Costa rallied late in the set with saves from senior libero Kelli Barry and kills from Scott.

“The first set’s outcome was completely based on our energy,” sophomore outside  hitter Talia Genova said. “Once we began to pick ourselves back up, great things followed.”

Costa picked up momentum and won the second set, 25-17. Junior middle Memphis Glasgow and Scott proved to be important key players in the second set, contributing numerous kills.

“Our entire team came to the decision that we would not be stripped of our chance to win Bay League, so we began to work on getting more kills and playing more scrappy,” junior opposite Amanda McDonald said.

Senior defensive specialist Lea Ungar and sophomore outside hitter Kate Reillly helped the Mustangs win 25-17 and 25-13 in the final sets. Ungar acquired five kills in the fourth set alone.

“In the first set we were not ready for their hard hits and strong blocks but we bounced back, winning the final three sets easily with more intensity and better defense,” sophomore Jenny Jenks said.

Girls volleyball, now 3-2 overall and 2-0 in Bay League, faced Inglewood away on Thursday. However, results were unavailable at the time of publication.

“I think that we will win the next game,” Glasgow said. “This will be a chance for us to try new things and let everyone play what position they want to.”
