Mira Costa cross country raced into the Bay League season with a big win.

The Mustangs won the first Bay League meet of the year on Oct. 12 at home. Costa competed against all the Bay League teams, with junior Olivia Hacohen leading the girl’s team and senior Xavier Court leading the boy’s team.

“We did amazing today, and a big part of Mira Costa cross country is that we run not just a team but as a family,” junior Anna Graves said. “We stick together and work together, and I think that is why we did so [well].”

Costa hosted this meet on campus for the first time in 25 years, after having it held in the past years at Polliwog Park. The runners ran on a new running course that went through the halls of Costa, parking lots, as well as the new turf field.

“I was over the moon excited to have it back here on campus,” coach Renee Williams-Smith said. “We had so much more participation from parents and families and everyone else and it felt like it was a completely electrifying environment.”

Boys varsity ran before the girls in the meet with Court placing first with a time of 15:08.70, senior Quinn Satow placing second (15:16.90), and junior Cy Chittenden placing third (15:21.70). Redondo and Palos Verdes runners trailed behind them.

“As a team, we did exceptionally well because Palos Verdes has been a very high caliber team” Court said. “Hopefully by Bay League finals we will be able to outrace them and come home with the win.”

Girls varsity team ran last in the meet and placed first and fourth in the top five, with Redondo runners placing the other two top spots. Hacohen placed first with a time of 17:16.60 and junior Brooke Inouye placed fourth with a time of  17:40.

“I think that we all put everything we had out on the course and worked together, which led to success,” Hacohen said.

The Mustangs will compete tomorrow at Mount Sac College in the biggest high school cross country meet in the country.

“I think the next meet will go just as well as [last week’s]” Graves said. “We have worked hard the entire season, and we are ready to go all the way to state this year.”
