Mustangs fall short in quarterfinals of Tournament of Champions

The Mira Costa girls volleyball team was defeated 3-1 in the quarterfinals to Torrey Pines high school in The Tournament Of Champions tournament at Santa Barbara high school on Sat., Oct 21.  The top performers of the tournament included senior Lea Ungar for her saves that contributed to Costa’s defensive game play.

Costa put up a strong fight in the first set but lost 26-24. The Mustangs then dominated the second set winning 25-13. Torrey Pines gained their control back and proceeded to defeat Costa 25-8 in the third set and 27-25 in the fourth set.

“Today’s game our biggest strength was our constant support and energy,” sophomore Kate Reilly said.  “After losing we came out together as team and came out really strong.”

The Mustangs’ current overall record is 9-3 and 7-1 in Bay League.  Next match, the Mustangs will head to Redondo Union high school on Tue., Oct. 24 for the last game of the season to compete for a Co-Bay League Championship Title.

“If we play hard and stay focused then we can beat Redondo,” said junior Sequoia Wattles.
