The Mira Costa Dance team hosted its annual Lip Sync Competition yesterday in the auditorium and this year the Advanced Drama Elective  placed first.

Second place went to Comedy Sports, and Drama 2 period 1 took third. A variety of clubs and electives including Dance Team, MUN, and ASB participate in the event. 22 Groups sang and danced along to songs of their choice and signed up for the event through Dance team, which uses Lip Sync as a fundraiser.

“Lip sync is such a great experience because you get to show friends, family, and your classmates a bit of your talent, whether it’s dancing or making others laugh,” Dance Team Member Ambria Benson said.

Dance Team encouraged student run clubs and electives to participate, although students who are not part of a club or elective can enter too. Prizes included $150 for first place, $100 for second, and $50 for third place.

“Advanced drama was surprised that we won because the competition was so heavy this year but we are thrilled that our hard work paid off and it was the perfect way to end my last lip sync at Costa,” Advanced Drama member Brinn Borowsky said.

Many performances incorporated multiple songs mashed together as one. ASB 5th period started off with Imma Be by the Black Eyed Peas song and ended with Rolex by Ayo Teo. The performance was cops and robbers themed and students dressed up in jump suits and police uniforms.

“ I had such a great time in the lip-sync. It was such a great opportunity to come together as a class and just have a lot of fun with our dance,” ASB member Kate Condren said.

Members of Mira Costa’s staff and administration judged Lip Sync. The judges this year were Lauren Brady, Maria Cabande, Mabel Huizar, and Bharathi Singh. The judges picked the winner based on their knowledge of their chosen song, how well their lip syncing matched the words and the choreographed dance according to Dance Team Captain.

“ Being a judge for the lip sync is very fun. Watching all the enthusiastic kids is great. I loved the Hawaiian performance.

Dance team hosts the Lip Sync to gather students at Mira Costa and share student talent, said Dance Team Member Lindy Mcnamara. Attendees bought tickets for $5 and tickets were $4 if bought prior to the Lip Sync from a dance team member. The money from the ticket sales goes toward funding the Dance Team.

“I love Lip Sync because it gives people the opportunity to bond with their clubs, teams, and organizations in a fun exciting way,” Dance Team captain Cami Benson said. “Students are always so creative with their ideas and watching them preform is something I look forward too.”
