The Mira Costa Marching Band attended competitions at both Oxnard and Moorpark High School on Saturday, in which band placed first and third, respectively.

Members of the marching band performed its show, “Outside the Bachs,” at both competitions. Members performed the entirety of the show for the second time, which the group perfected two weeks ago, Marching Band Drum Major Bianca Dulong said.

“We had two competitions in one day and a rehearsal in between them, which is something the organization hasn’t ever done,” Dulong said. “But it’s ultimately preparing the band for the future if we decide to put ourselves in a more advanced competitive circuit where multiple competitions a day are the norm.”

At the Oxnard competition, the marching band’s overall score went down by two points from their previous competition. At the Moorpark competition, the group’s score was a total of 81 points out of 100, three points higher than their previous highest score.

“The members voiced concerns about the Oxnard show, saying that it was not a great run due to factors we hadn’t prepared for, such as performing in daylight and the grass field as opposed to turf,” Dulong said. “But the band really pushed through and had a great show regardless, and it wasn’t a bad run by any means.”

The band’s show consists of three parts: the opener, the ballad and the closing. As a result of placing third  at the Moorpark competition, the marching band qualified for the Southern California Championships, which will take place tomorrow at Warren High School. This will be the band’s last competition of the season.

“The Moorpark performance was really special. The energy was incredibly high for the entire performance and even the audience could feel the love that the members had for the show and each other,” Dulong said. “This led to a jump in our scores and qualified us for the Southern California championships, which everyone was ecstatic about.”
