Mira Costa’s Comedy Sportz team won 40-30 against El Segundo High School on Jan. 19 in their first match of 2018 in Costa’s small theatre.

Since the match was the first of this school years second semester, new players who made the team in tryouts held earlier in the year were able to participate, according to one of the team managers, Shelby Friedman.

“I’m pumped! I was super excited and nervous but I think it went really well, and we won so that’s good! I’m glad it’s over so if I ever play again I’ll know what to expect and be a little calmer going into it,” said Ansley Rowell, who played in her first match after joining the team this year.

This match, four of the newly added twelve players participated. Since it is their first match, the new members are slowly introduced into the games in group with more experienced players so they can learn and get the feel of it, according to Sophi Boylan.

“As their managers, me and Jack thought they did very well for their first match and we are super proud of them,” said manager Molly Desimone.

Before the match, Costa team members Carson Billingsley, Stephanie Sala, and Sophi Boylan posted a voting poll on their Instagram page that asked students to vote for games they wanted to see played during the match. The results were in favor of the game “Expert Challenge”, according to Billingsley.

“With our new Instagram, we could provide a cool way to get the audience involved before the match by voting on what games we should play,’’ said Billingsley.

Since students voted for “Expert Challenge” on the Instagram polls, the Comedy Sportz team opened up the match with that game. The polls were successful, so the team plans to keep posting them before matches, according to Billingsley.

“I think it’s great that we were able to provide a way for our fans to get involved with the matches so that it’s as fun for them as it is for us,” said Boylan, who helped create the polls.

In the first half, team captain Stephanie Sala led Sophi Boylan, Ansley Rowell and Devin Bodin in games of expert challenge, dating game, sound effects and beastie rap. In the second half, captain  Riley Civerolo Douglas, Devon Lay, Peter Moglia, and Cody Schneider played townhall meeting, good bad worse, four square and ended with garth.

“My favorite game is ‘what you got’, personally because it’s a great, hype game that gets the match started at high energy and its also an audience favorite so it’s fun to watch and play,” said Boylan.

The next Comedy Sportz match will take place at Costa’s small theatre on Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. against the Redondo Seahawks.

“Please come by and support us and I’m sure you will have a great time!’’ said Billingsley.
