In their final game of the 2017-18’ season the Mustangs fell just short to the Redondo Union Seahawks 63-57.

Mira Costa’s varsity basketball team suffered a home loss to the Redondo Union Seahawks at home on Thursday Feb. 8th. The Mustangs were not able to qualify for CIF playoffs following the loss.

“I think the mindset of all of us was simply that we were going to try our hardest to make it not be our last game of the season, and to leave absolutely everything we had out on the court,” junior Parker Lynch said.

Redondo jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, scoring in the paint with center Quinn Collins. The Mustangs struggled to stop the Redondo offense throughout the opening quarter, going down, 22-12.

“We knew that their center is dominant when he goes to the baseline, so our goal was to force him to the middle and be ready to help on him,” Lynch said.

In the second quarter the Mustangs incapable of slowing down the Redondo offense, but were able to score in transition and from beyond the three point line. The Mustangs went into halftime facing 36-20 deficit.

“We eventually came back after being down in the first half, but made some mistakes that cost us,” sophomore Max McCalla said.

The Mustangs began to heat up at the start of the second half, with Costa playing well in all facets of the game. Costa’s big men played great defense in the post, and Junior Carson Carrey and others were able to connect from deep. Costa went into the fourth trailing 48-37.

“We knew we were not out of the game yet and making a comeback was nothing that we couldn’t do,” Lynch said.

The Mustangs showed true grit in the fourth quarter, clawing their way back into the game. The Mustangs’ offense was red hot from behind the arc and converted on second chance opportunities in the paint. Despite outscoring Redondo in the final quarter, Costa couldn’t come all the way back, and ultimately lost to the Seahawks by a score of 63-57.

“In the 4th, everyone played as hard as they could. We just didn’t want our season to end,” sophomore Tyler Antrobius said.

Costa finished their season off 12-14 overall and 5-5 in league play. The Mustangs were not able to advance to The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs, but overall were happy with their effort throughout the season.

“Our season went okay. We had a rough early schedule which put us in a hole,” Antrobius said.
