In a close game, Costa girls basketball ultimately fell short to Redondo Union, with a final score of 56-41 in a home game on Tuesday night.

“I thought we played hard and aggressive,” said junior Winslow Smith. “We need to clean up our defense and communicate more.”

Costa started with a lead, scoring a three-pointer in the first minute of the game. The game stayed close, with both teams scoring back and forth. At halftime, the score was 27-20, with Redondo ahead.

“I think that in the beginning we started out okay, but a little slow,” Senior co-captain Courtney Lo said. “We weren’t really attempting that many shots or playing aggressively. During the end of the second quarter we started falling apart a little, and weren’t really making shots.”

The battle continued throughout the third quarter. Both teams defended the ball, yet were able to score throughout the quarter. Going into the fourth quarter, Redondo still had a lead, with a score of 34-29.

“During the third quarter I think we started to pick up the pace,” Lo said. “[We] started making some big plays and baskets.”

Once the fourth quarter began, Redondo began increasing offensive plays, scoring nearly twenty points in the last quarter alone. Costa kept defending, but ultimately lost in the end, with a final score of 56-41.

“Near the end of the game though we fell apart and the pressure got to us, and we let the gap in the score get bigger,” Lo said. “We started making some bad plays and weren’t rotating well on defense.”

The top performer of Tuesday’s game was junior Winslow Smith, scoring a three-pointer to start off the game. She continued to score and play strong defense for the remainder of the game.

“I thought I got in foul trouble in the first half,” Smith said. “But [I] was able to slow down in the second half to go on a run during the third quarter.”

The Mustangs next game will take place on May 7th, where they will face the Culver City Centaurs.

“I think the team will do a better job against Culver City,” Lo said. “[We are] going to work on staying calm. Since we already beat them once, the team will be less nervous and more prepared for how the game will be.”
