Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League held a varsity pairs tournament in Hermosa Beach on October 1st. Costa Boys Beach Volleyball’s top-seeded teams in the tournament were junior Victor Loiola, senior Jason Walmer, junior Charlie Coordt, and senior Garrett Gronbach.

Three of four Costa teams went undefeated, with the fourth still winning in pool play. Mira Costa’s passing and ball control was precise and got them many kills. The Mustangs got serves in, applying good pressure on opponents and elevating their game offensively.

“I felt like Zach and I served well,” said junior Stone Seligson. “We had good ball control, so we could put the ball away.”

Loiola and Walmer excelled in the playoffs, dominating a Redondo Union pair team in the first round, then beating a St. Francis duo 21-15 in the one-set playoff matches. They faced Redondo Union’s team, freshman Carter Mirabal and senior David Mansilla in the finals, winning 21-13.

Coordt and Gronbach made it to the semifinals before losing to a Redondo team in a tight match. Chapin and Seligson lost to a Redondo team that finished in second place in the first round.

Despite having a short season, the Costa Beach Volleyball team has showcased its strong skill set. Loiola and Walmer aim to continue their excellence as a pair coming off this tournament win.

“Going back to practice this week I will be working on the flaws I had in my game this weekend,” Loiola said. “I want to make sure everything is in tune.”
