With one championship under their belt, the Mira Costa girls golf team has one more to go.

The girls golf team won the Southern Regional Championships on Nov. 12 at Goose Creek Golf Course. The Mustangs scored a 366, their lowest round this season, and placed first allowing them to move on to the California State Championships.

“I was pretty confident that our team was going to do well going and I am really proud of us because this was the most important tournament so far,” junior Ashley Kim said. “I’m so excited to represent Costa at State.”

Though she had a rocky start and hit two balls into the water, Kim was able to score a 72 after getting birdies on four of her last five holes.

“I knew I couldn’t give up after the first few holes and that I had to get back into,” Kim said.

On the eighteenth hole, senior Marni Murez finished the game at 71 when she hit a seven iron twenty feet from the hole. Her birdie putt lipped out of the hole, but she was able to tap the ball in for par.

“Throughout the game, I did not let the bad holes get to me,” Murez said. “I didn’t have my best start, but I hung in there and bounced back.”

Junior Lexi Nielsen struggled during the first nine holes, but managed to score an 87 after getting three birdies on the second half of the course.

“After a rough start, I was really happy that I was able to hold it together and play great for the rest of the round,” Nielsen said.

Costa is 15-3 overall. Their first place title at the Southern Regional Championships let them move on to play in the California State Championships on Tuesday at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.

“To win on Tuesday we just need to play our own game and not focus on the other teams,” Murez said. “We also need to be patient on the course and take it shot by shot.”

In preparation for the California State Championships, the girls are going to Poppy Hills Golf Course the morning of the tournament to chip balls and play a practice round. Then, they are going to chart the course and discuss strategies.

“We want to get a feel for how far the landing is and discuss every hole individually,” Costa golf practice coach Josh Albert said. “We want to get ready so that the course is comfortable and we can get the results that we want.”
